Marc Jacobs' Tribute to Stephen Sprouse

When the idea of a Pop Shop line crossed Marc Jacobs mind, little did he know that his idea would evolve into a tribute to Stephen Sprouse. For those of you who may not be remember, Sprouse was an iconic artist and fashion designer in the 80's. His designs were a mix between sophistication, punk and pop. In 2001, Sprouse teamed up with Louis Vuitton and created a graffiti filled line which quickly sold out.

To tribute Sprouse, Louis Vuitton will release a limited-edition collection comprised of accessories and clothing. They will carry two of Sprouse's most iconic designs, the rose and the graffiti print. The line includes printed handbags, footwear, jewelry, wallets, headbands, and sunglasses. “I tried to take what Stephen had done at Vuitton and then kind of flip it in my head, and make it Vuitton’s work for Stephen, not Stephen’s work for Vuitton,” Marc Jacobs said. “I just felt it was a funny way to play with it, to pretend to be Sprouse for a bit, and use the work that he did, and then bring it back to the work that he did before I collaborated with him.”

To continue on with Sprouse's tribute, Marc posed completely nude for Harper's Bazaar painted in the artist's graffiti print and carrying one of the tribute bags. “I don’t have a problem taking my clothes off, as anybody who has picked up a magazine in the past year could tell you,” Marc Jacobs said. “I had no qualms or shame about it, but knew fully well that any full frontal nudity wouldn’t be appropriate for Harper’s Bazaar.”
