NY Fash Week: Betsey Johnson

The show celebrated her illustrious span of 30 powerful years in business. Her unflinching style was at its best with an blend of punk rock influence and 30s speakeasy. Her star studded runway was lined with tiny round tables bearing red roses, candy cigarettes and bottles of chianti. Chloe Sevigny, Tyra Banks and Nigel Barker were amongst the celebrities in attendance.

Models rocked the runway in over the knee black socks with yellow stripes, short shorts, brightly rimmed sunglasses and lots of attitude. Hair was wild with locks crimped and R-E-D lips. Colors hovered in the primary range with lots of fierce red, hot pink and royal blue. Johnson wasn’t alone this season in popularizing the beret. And like her peers, her Fall ’08 creations hugged curves and emphasized the waist. Nigel Barker commented that “the beauty of Betsey Johnson is the frivolity of the designs and the color palette. She designs for women and men, women love her clothing and men love to look at a woman in Betsey Johnson.”

With her typical energy and enthusiasm, Betsey cartwheeled down the runway at the show’s finale as models paraded by with huge bouquets of balloons. Congrats on 30 rockin’ years, Betsey.
